Tour Introduction
& Start Point
This part of the tour is the introduction of local resident history of New Brighton bringing a vast number of historical images and stories of the early European Settlement at the Museum.
Included in this part of the tour is the arrival and history of Ngāi Tahu and Ngāi Tūāhuriri the Iwi and Hapū of the Ōtautahi Waitaha Christchurch and Canterbury.

Mall
A new $2.5 million village green surrounded by bars, restaurants and shops is being proposed for New Brighton Mall A large, grassed area is proposed, with a big stage for performances at one end. Market stalls, food trucks, pop-up retail outlets, a social enterprise community space and a skate area for young people are also in the plans.

Library
In 1990 the decision to site the library in the Pier building was not without some public opposition. This included claims that the building needed a more vibrant, happening attraction and would be underutilised, a white elephant carried by ratepayers.
“The library proposed for the pier terminus building at New Brighton will be a high-tech leisure facility radically different from traditional suburban libraries” Mayor Vicki Buck told news media.

Pier
The New Brighton Master Plan presents a future vision and sets goals for the redevelopment and recovery of New Brighton Commercial Centre. It was prepared in response to the damage caused to the centre in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. It also forms part of the Council’s Suburban Centres Programme and was prepared in consultation with key stakeholders and the local community. The purpose of the New Brighton Centre Master Plan is to help direct land and business owners in the redevelopment of the Centre and to attract private investment.

Playground
Located by the sea next to the New Brighton Mall, New Brighton Pier, Library and soon to be constructed Salt Water pools this playground offers a complete outing for the whole family.
Local school children and community members had input into the design of the playground, which is the first major project to be delivered by Development Christchurch Limited (DCL). It was delivered ahead of time and under budget which was around $5 million of a total allocated spend in New Brighton of $19.2 million.

Wai Whetū
In September 2019 concerns were raised by some locals that the Hot pools name was chosen without input from the residents. With the belief either Christchurch or New Brighton should have been included in an English name.
However those involved in the project have said the name has received mostly positive feedback.
